Desynchronization of human circadian rhythms.

چکیده
In man as well as in animals, diurnal rhythms are based on endogenous, periodic processes which can be considered self-sustained oscillations in a technical sense2). Evidence for this is given by the observation that, underconstant conditions, the rhythm continues a) undamped and b) with a frequency which deviates from that of the earth's rotation6). It is this deviation of the free-running 'circadian '11) period from 24 hours which excludes external cues as possible causes of the rhythm. In many aspects, the whole organism behaves like a single oscillator which obeys the law of oscillation theory. Some findings, however, suggest that the circadian system consists of a multiplicity of oscillators which normally are synchronized with each other but which can become desynchronized under special circumstances13,14). Thishypothesis seems to be supported by recent results from experiments with human subjects which will be discussed below.

Concepts in human biological rhythms
Biological rhythms and their temporal organization are adaptive phenomena to periodic changes in environmental factors linked to the earth's rotation on its axis and around the sun. Experimental data from the plant and animal kingdoms have led to many models and concepts related to biological clocks that help describe and understand the mechanisms of these changes. Many of the prevailing concep...
متن کاملCircadian desynchronization of core body temperature and sleep stages in the rat.
Proper functioning of the human circadian timing system is crucial to physical and mental health. Much of what we know about this system is based on experimental protocols that induce the desynchronization of behavioral and physiological rhythms within individual subjects, but the neural (or extraneural) substrates for such desynchronization are unknown. We have developed an animal model of hum...
متن کاملThe survey of fluctuations of attention on circadian and weekly rhythms among high school students
Introduction: Human cognitive activities are affected by the time of doing homework, biologic rhythms and interaction among them. Method: this research accomplished to specify the fluctuation patterns of daily and weekly cycles of the students attention. The research method was correlation. The statistical population of this study were 45 female students in 11th grade from a high school in hu...

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) coordinates via multiple outputs physiological and behavioural circadian rhythms. The SCN is composed of a heterogeneous network of coupled oscillators that entrain to the daily light-dark cycles. Outside the physiological entrainment range, rich locomotor patterns of desynchronized rhythms are observed. Previous studies interpreted these results as the output ...
متن کاملSpontaneous internal desynchronization of locomotor activity and body temperature rhythms from plasma melatonin rhythm in rats exposed to constant dim light
BACKGROUND We have recently reported that spontaneous internal desynchronization between the locomotor activity rhythm and the melatonin rhythm may occur in rats (30% of tested animals) when they are maintained in constant dim red light (LLdim) for 60 days. Previous work has also shown that melatonin plays an important role in the modulation of the circadian rhythms of running wheel activity (R...
متن کاملShift Work and Circadian Dysregulation of Reproduction
Health impairments, including reproductive issues, are associated with working nights or rotating shifts. For example, shift work has been associated with an increased risk of irregular menstrual cycles, endometriosis, infertility, miscarriage, low birth weight or pre-term delivery, and reduced incidence of breastfeeding. Based on what is known about circadian regulation of endocrine rhythms in...
